Deliciously sweet and creamy, you would never guess this Superfood Turmeric Hot Chocolate is good for you! The secret to the sweetness comes from dates, which also provide half a serving of fruit along with fiber, potassium, and a kick of energy. The turmeric and cinnamon add a punch of anti-inflammatory properties, and the dash of pepper helps your body absorb the turmeric.

There is something so comforting and nostalgic about a hot cup of hot cocoa. It warms the body and the soul and reminds me of when I was young, when my family and I would drink steaming hot chocolate from mugs shaped into Santa’s head while decorating our Christmas tree or after a long afternoon of building snow forts outside with the neighborhood children.

My family recently travelled down to Florida to visit my husband and me. While they were down here, we drank hot chocolate one morning. As we sipped the warm cups on our patio, I remembered those cozy childhood moments.

As an adult, sometimes I crave reminders of those simpler times.

However, also as an adult, I try to make as many healthy choices as possible. I took replacing the white sugar traditionally in hot chocolate as a sort of challenge. How could I retain the sweetness while removing the white sugar? It just so happened that I had a box of dates out on my counter. I thought I would give them a try. I was thrilled with the result: Superfood Turmeric Hot Chocolate!

The dates lend the right amount of sweetness to the hot chocolate, and the flavor pairs well with the chocolate, giving it a subtle, almost nutty flavor.

My favorite part? A half serving of fruit is in each helping of this hot chocolate thanks to the superfood dates, which are packed with fiber, antioxidants, potassium, and vitamins and minerals.

Take a bow, dates! Talk about a win! Don’t you love it when the universe works out perfectly?

Meanwhile, fellow superfoods turmeric and cinnamon in this hot chocolate add a punch of anti-inflammatory properties.

The sidekick black pepper helps your body absorb the turmeric but flavorwise holds its own by adding just a little kick and heat, which I love.

Altogether, this hot chocolate is an easy, healthy choice to curl up with at the end of a long day.

Recommended pairings with this Superfood Turmeric Hot Chocolate are a good book, a fireplace, and a cuddle buddy :).

Equipment

  • 1.5 quart slow cooker

Ingredients

  • 4 cups milk you can also use a nut milk for a vegan version
  • 6 dates pitted
  • 2 tbsp cocoa
  • 1 ½ tsp turmeric
  • ¾ tsp cinnamon
  • ½ tsp nutmeg
  • 1 dash pepper
  • 1 dash salt optional

Instructions

  • Combine all ingredients in the blender and blend until completely smooth, about 2 minutes on high.
  • Pour the mixture into the slow cooker and heat on low for about 50 minutes, or until warm. Immediately turn down the slow cooker to the "warm" setting to prevent overheating and curdling.
  • Ladle into mugs, garnish with a dash of nutmeg or cinnamon, and enjoy!

Notes

If you don’t have a slow cooker, you can cook the hot chocolate in a saucepan on a range at low to medium heat for 5 to 10 minutes. Either way, be careful it doesn’t boil!
If you accidentally (or purposefully) make too much, not to worry! Pour the leftover hot chocolate into a mason jar and enjoy the next morning.
Please note, this recipe is not keto or sugar free. It is free from added sugars, but dates have a good deal of natural sugar in them.
